ASUS Mobo flashing green light with clicking noise. PSU fan is spinning though. Defective Mobo/PSU/CPU?

I had a corsair cx 750 power supply for about two years. But about two weeks ago my computer would randomly crash when gaming. I figured it was a bad power supply so got corsair to send me a new one under my warranty. For about a week everything was great.

Yesterday I was playing mount and blade waveband (not a demanding game hardware-wise) and I heard a POP and my computer shut down. It then smelt like some weird chemical or burning. When I tried to turn it back on nothing happened. Not even my Mobo LED light came on. Naturally I suspected the PSU had failed (capacitor?)

So I went down to the store and got a EVGA 850w G2- plugged it in and now when I flip the on switch on the back of my PSU my Mobo green light starts flashing off and on while making a click click click noise.

I don't know if this PSU is defective too or if maybe my Mobo has problems. My PSU fan however DOES spin while the LED light is flashing and so does my cup fan.

No idea what the problem is- my first suspicion was I got another bad PSU but 3 bad PSUs in the span of 3 weeks seems like too big of a coincidence. Plus my PSU fan does spin once I flip the power switch on the PSU to on (without trying to power on my comp). I also find it weird my CPU fan spins without me trying to power on my comp as well.

My specs:
ASUS m5a97 Mobo
ASUS GTX 770 card
AMD FX 8350 CPU
EVGA 850w G2 (80 gold)
Ripjaw Ram 8gb (4x2)
Samsung 850 evo 250gb ssd

Any help would be immensely appreciated.

can be two issues. one is the smell strong with the power supply. most pooping sounds are caps. you may be able to see it with a good flashlight. if the power supply failed bad it may have shorted out the mb too.
with your rig to test for a bad mb..take it down to one ram stick and no gpu see if it errors. also clear the cmos. on the mb if it still errors out pull it and check the caps/vrm of the mb for damage. if you dont see any call and speak with a level 2/3 customer support rep/eng. have them pay for new parts as there rma part was defective and killed your rig.

Thanks for your reply Smorizio. I cleared it down just to the CPU and one RAM stick and the same issue. Reset CMOS too with no error beeps occurring. The LED light flashes green and clicks before I even try to turn on my computer which is super strange- my CPU fan also spins. When I try to power on my comp it just continues to blink. Only by turning off my PSU switch does it stop.
