new pc build bought new blank hdd as old ide obviously needed to be upgraded. thought this would fix the issue an allow windows to install but still same error message on bios. have removed cmos battery and even changed it for another. still same issue. oddly the hdd isnt showing. brand new one aswell as old one. would this be a mobo issue? or do you think its a simple case of the dvd drive is shot an needs to be replaced. have gone through previous threads on here to no luck trying all the recommended advice boot sequence eg put cd drive first etc etc. no luck un plugged hdd n luck. im stumped to be honest. have tried booting via usb same problem. mother board is an AM3 no model number on board. have tried my other spare mobos still same issue. all helps appreciated cheers.

I'd recommend that you try the drive with a different computer and download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool, so that you can test it and see if anything unusual pops-up. If you don't have that option - at least try a different SATA port and cable on yours, to see if the same thing happens again. Please make sure that each cable is properly connected and that you've set the boot priority with the OD (optical drive) as first boot device.
Did you remember to set the boot priority properly when you've tried to boot from the USB flash drive? If you did and you still got the same error, it's probably not the DVD.
Which version of Windows are you trying to install?
