I agree with Kris Rivera, I am currently in the process in building my first desktop. It may seem trivial at first, but once you do the research and get the parts down its just a matter of looking/waiting for deals on parts. I haven't started putting it together yet, but most say it is not that bad. Also, a custom build one would also be much cheaper, you could probably build a better PC with the same budget as that hp desktop.
I do not know about the 600m, but 8gb ram is pretty much standard, i7 is great, although an i5 would do. 1TB hdd is fine as long as you are fine on missing out on the benefits of an SSD.
