Does an USB external sound card works like a PCI one?

Hi, so I bought a 5.1 system, came home connected everything, and when I was about to plug it to the pc, boom, my motherboard doesn't have the 5.1 support. So I found a very old PCI sound card, hooked it up installed it, but the speakers do not sound. The mixer says it is sounding, but it's a lie. So I'm planning in buying one USB external sound card or another PCI card. Which one is better? Thank you very much.

If you're looking for basic 5.1 sound a USB card will do the job however the PCI card gets more bandwidth so when it comes to features an internal card will be able to do more stuff (such as simulated positional sound). Plus they can be cheap, such as the SoundBlaster Audigy Fx or Rx both which will work with your speakers.

Hi, thank you for your answer. I just bought a Logitech z506, using the orange, black and green plugs.

Thank you for answering. I'm still looking for one, I could get a $15 bucks Genius card.
