Poor GPU performance on Linux

I got an R9 Fury the day after launch with the intention of being able to max out basically every game at 1080p but I'm getting really poor performance in most games and I'm not sure why. Dying Light I average around 20 FPS on the Performance preset. Ark Survival I average around 40 FPS on the Medium preset with Epic render distance(actually improves FPS). And there are others where my performance is console grade or worse. I have the latest 15.7 drivers from AMD and I'm running the 3.19 kernel. In synthetic benchmarks like Unigine Heaven and Valley I get scores of 1187 and 2404 respectively while they were on the highest possible settings with Ultra quality 8xAA and in Heaven Extreme Tessellation so I don't think it's a driver issue but it may be. Can anyone offer any assistance?

Note: I'm pretty sure it's not a CPU bottleneck. I have an FX-9590 and according to my hardware monitor on my secondary display my GPU is generally pinned at around 100% use during play.

First thing to do would be uninstall all drivers and run driver sweeper to clear everything out. Then I am assuming you have it installed in the closest slot to the CPU, re-install all the drivers, and try and run 3DMark Firestrike, see what your score is compared to others they have in their systems. You may well just have a bad card and need to replace it.

may just be one of them things at the moment ?? amd is behind with there Linux support

''For now there is only the R9 Fury support with the Catalyst 15.7 driver as there is not yet any open-source Fury/Fiji GPU support and it could be a few months before seeing that support materialize.''

the way amd is going you may not get any Linux support at all ??

Well I'll have to wait and see then but it's weird because my Unigine Valley score is only like 200 points below the windows score which given I'm on Linux and OpenGL 200 points isn't a big deal. I mean my old 7870 scored less than half of what my fury did and yet my Fury doesn't seem to be noticeably better in real games.

ya , I see that here with this 7850 between windows and Linux .. one game I got runs native on Linux and dose a good job is etqw.. games with a native Linux client will do a lot better than ones run through a emulator like wine .. I think tropics runs well on Linux as well

I thought I had my Linux scores copyed over here in windows to compare and post them for a guy here at toms before but cant find them .

anyway looking at thatlinux test site it seems NVidia is doing the better job on it today ..

like as shown at that one review

Yea...well I never use wine anyway. I don't like it and it's just a pain in the <mod edit> to deal with. On top of that there's no Windows exclusive titles I really want to play anyway so all of my games are native Linux.

I don't know I thought this old 7850 looked to do a good job with Linux mint17 and I cant recall but I think its one of the older 14. xx Linux driver ?? it was not perfect but I don't guess it was all that bad ?

I guess with that new release card its all about how they go about fixes and all . you kinda got to figure on that as well .. I'm sure they will come out with something to wake it up some more

I assume your not talking about steam converted games ??

Well Dying light which is the game I have the biggest issue with is native linux. The engine the game is on supports Linux but Idk if it's just a Win wrapper or not. But it's definitely not a steam conversion.

no telling dealing with steam ? I don't run any steam / origin/ uplay. games - games I use are full rental games fully on there disk with out 3ed party malware involvement or mandatory internet connection --

look up articles like this , maybe just the game ?

I wish they had 1080p marks. I'm reinstalling bioshock infinite to see what I can get at ultra 1080p. Hopefully it's better than their numbers since they're on 4k.

could be ?? what he says like on page 4 reguardless of the res. don't sound good ??

''BioShock Infinite is just one of many Steam Linux games with known slow performance for the AMD Catalyst Linux driver. BioShock Infinite was ported to Linux earlier in the year and even multiple Catalyst Linux driver releases later the NVIDIA performance reigns supreme. Thus with Catalyst 15.7 we have a situation where the Radeon R9 Fury is performing the speed of a GeForce GTX 780 Ti and slower than a GeForce GTX 970... The GeForce GTX 970 sells for around $350 USD, which is $200 less than the Radeon R9 Fury!''

but like on page 6 it show like you with the uengine valley and heaven look to be good there ??

you may have to wait out another driver release ?? its a newer card just released so I'm sure theres bugs to be worked out ....

Yea you're probably right since it has only been out for like 2 weeks but even still Windows is having way less issues but then again Linux never does get first priority.

well its like the one guy said in the comments abiut its not the hardware it amd dragging around with there support look at there windows support now anything under 7 is not supported anymore and I feel soon 7 will be removed as well - that's hoe amd is these days - I can count on them to support me I still run from xp and up and I got to use old drivers that were the last that had all my windows supported -- look at the new gtx 960 it supports just about them all still to this day the 970 and 980's just vista and above - NVidia got me covered amd don't anymore .. 13.12 is the last ''good'' amd driver and if you got to get it from amd the link is broke [last I checked all drivers below 14.xx downloads are now broke ]

I guess amd now feels if your not running the latest and greatest os [windows] they don't have time to bother with you [opinion]

for a company that's in the fix they are they can sure find more ways to shoot then selves in the foot

Well I hope they fix this because I don't have the money to go to nvidia since I just spent a good chunk of change on the Fury and I really don't want to go back to windows but I can...

yes sir. I understand, and know where your coming from ... few years ago if asked about running intel I would of said no way , but now I'm running intel first time in 15 years and as soon as this card cant do it its NVidia next on that department as well unless something changes over at amd .. I did not even update to a -R- card just hanging on to this hd 7000 till it dies I guess.

That probably would have been the better way to go. Instead I got rid of my 7870 in favor of a Fury but I'm pretty sure in some instances that actually dropped my performance because of the crappy drivers. I do get better performance in most titles but not all and it's not $570 better that's for damn certain.

seeing that's a more powerful card then my 7850 I would be real giddy with it if was a 7870 .. I don't do as much in Linux but I really did not see anything major with the 7850 using it like I said the etqw runs as good maybe better in Linux then windows [it install from the retail disk no steam clients or ''whine'' involved ] that's what I liked about real iD games..

I don't support any games that has a 3ed party getting as much control over my computer then I do as in the steam eula ''with out limitations'' - no thanks , i'll pass

see cause with all that you don't know if its you or something that 3ed party may of done or doing ?? your clueless

look at the guys with the new high end card that out of the blue report low frames lag low performance -- see they think its the card but it may be steam origin uplay making there adjustments to limit the game in the name of fair game play ?

funny how that works and they all got the common theme [3ed party client games ]

So I tried Bioshock Infinite and the game runs at around 100 FPS most of the time with dips to 40 in certain spots on ultra so I'm wondering if it's an issue with both the drivers but also dying light being horribly optimized.
