No sound over HDMI (HDMI doesn't appear in playback devices or device manager)

Just built my first PC and pretty proud of myself, other than the fact I can't get sound via HDMI. Here's the scoop:

Intel G3258 CPU
Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H rev 3.0 MOBO
Upstar M240a1 monitor (with speakers)
Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (all updates installed)

Video works fine via HDMI, but I've never gotten audio. I've tried the following:

1) Updated to latest graphics driver from Intel (using their upgrade assistant)
2) Downgraded graphics driver back several versions from Intel
3) Reverted to graphics and sound drivers from Gigabyte's website
4) Checked my BIOS version (up to date w/ the latest on GB's website)
5) Uninstalled and reinstalled various graphics and sound drivers and devices
6) Plugged in to an HDTV, which also produced no audio
7) Checked for hidden playback devices

Under playback devices and the Device Manager (sounds), I see only High Definition Audio Device (speakers and headphones). I'll intermittently see Intel Display Audio (!) in the Device Manager when I upgrade the driver, but it always disappears when I do the required restart. It's not there now, for example.

Totally stumped on this one and would appreciate any help. I appear to have made the problem worse, but I guess I wasn't getting audio to begin with, so no harm! Thanks in advance...

UPDATE: Bought a cheap sound card (actually free after rebate) hoping audio would work over the HDMI connection, but it still doesn't! Now I see this message under playback devices: "AMD HDMI Audio Not Plugged In". I've again tried everything on Google, and have spent countless hours on this. Bummed nobody here has had a suggestion, but I guess I'm just doomed to using some crappy external speakers for sound. Not looking forward to the desk clutter!

No, unfortunately. I never figured it out and have been forced to use headphones all this time. I posted this question in a couple places, but nobody ever knew the answer. Please do post back if you figure anything out!
