I'm having a hard time deciding between the r9 390 and gtx 970. I'm also going to upgrade my psu.
I'm going to be playing at 1080p (for now, at least a year. probably more) and 60 fps.
I honestly prefer Nvidia as a company as well.
What do you guys think?

Both cards are (equally) great, but I prefer the r9 390 since it has 8gb of vRAM so it is more future proof since games are are requiring more and more vram through out these times, but gtx 970 is perfect for 1080p, it has a noticeable less power consumption, Nividia is better and more reliable, but AMD is better price for value..

I would choose the r9 390

Thanks for the help! that modular power supply looks good, excellent price. Its only 620 watt and bronze though, wouldnt that be cutting it a bit close with the r9 390 considering overclocks and the rest of my pc?

"PowerColor's R9 390 PCS+ is currently available online for $340, which is $10 more than AMD's reference design pricing, a reasonable increase if you only look at the R9 390. You can find the GTX 970 online for $310, which is definitely a better option in terms of performance, power draw, and noise—pretty much everything. Don't get me wrong, this isn't PowerColor's fault as their card is good for a R9 390; it's AMD's old technology and their pricing that affects the product negatively. What the R9 390 has going for it is its large 8 GB memory capacity, though it doesn't make a difference because this is a 1080p-performance-class card."

620 watts with overclocking is cutting it close for the 390.

Here is Guru3D's power supply recommendation:

- AMD R9 390 and 390X - On your average system the card requires you to have a 550~600 Watt power supply unit.

If you are going to overclock GPU or processor, then we do recommend you purchase something with some more stamina.

The Gigabyte G1 gaming or the ASUS STRIX. The two best 970 models on the market right now.
