i built my cousin a computer about three years ago with a water cooler. the cooler leaked, and he didnt notice the temps untill i looked a few days after he noticed his games lagging. speedfan measured 125 C! im suprised the computer didnt shut it down, the idle temps were about 90... so i thought that some of the long term issues (slower "choppy games" eg. battlefield runnin on low, WoW running on low settings, etc) he had been having with his computer after i replaced the cooler is heat damage from about 2 years ago, but after i tested my cpu (2500k) in his computer, it had the same problems. the gpu and ram arent the problem, we tried replacing those also having no change. im thinking it could be the mother board, because the water cooler leaked a little bit, but i dont see how they would be damaged slightly with out being completely destroyed. any ideas? maybe the computer isnt receiving enough power? im completetly lost.

Solution
It is very possible that some of the capacitors were damaged. If you can get the exact motherboard you have you can just switch them out so you won't have to do a fresh install of windows. See if some are swelling up around the CPU.

i checked the capacitors, they seemed to be fine, no bent, leaking, swollen, or burned marks on them. could it be the chipset? or some other part of the motherboard that is malfunctioning? also, is there any way it could be the psu? or some odd driver issue? he has re installed windows at least 3 times since these issues started, forgot to mention that in the question.

The most probable cause is the motherboard. Since your processor had the same issue as his it rules out the processor. If you put his power supply on your computer you could see if yours is under powered. However my experience is that when a power supply is going bad you will smell it burning or it will sometimes power up and sometimes it won't. I would get a new motherboard.

ok! thank you so much for the help. i had no idea the motherboard could cause a non-severe issue. it was my impression that if there was an issue, it would mean the computer would be completely unusable. my last question before we buy the motherboard, is there anyway it could be a software issue? weather it be a virus that passed through a non windows file, or some strange driver issue being not compatible with certain other hardware? ie. z77 chipset drivers have an issue with 2 raid 0 arrays being used at once. just grasping at straws before the big purchase.

You can go to the website for the manufacturer of your motherboard and download the latest drivers. See if that helps. I don't think a bios update will help as it doesn't seem that the bios was an issue before the leak. Try downloading the latest AMD drivers for your video card. If none of this works then it is the motherboard. Last thought is does he have a virus program? Download Malwarebytes and see if it detects anything. Malware makes a computer run slowly as well. If there is a virus you probably won't be able to download any program to detect the virus. Tha's usually how you know it is this problem.
