So I'm new to building a PC and simply want to run a single monitor at 1080p at 60 FPS max settings.

Based on my research, can I safely assume the 980 ti and 980 are a complete overkill? In that case, would a 970 be suitable? I don't know much about the AMD cards but I have seen the R9 390 is good. I just don't want to overdo it and end up spending a lot more money on a GPU than I need it for.

The games I typically play are MMO's (Star Wars: The Old Republic, Elder Scrolls Online) but with FO4 and Battlefront coming out I would like to get ready to run those at max settings at 60fps as well.

Thanks! Do you believe a 970 would be able to work with a 1440p setup as well with max settings at 60fps?

No. Maybe some older games but current and yet to come AAA games, no. Sorry.

A 970 in 1440p will get you in the high 30's in games like tomb raider, bf4, assassines creed black flag(high quality , not ultra). You really need a 980 or higher to max out and keep fps near 60 fps in graphically challenging games at 1440p.
