So I've watched videos from popular "Youtubers" on how to do this, and they all use 99% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol. When I asked for this in my pharmacy they showed me a 1L bottle with a white label saying some technical stuff, nothing like what they used in their tutorials so I didn't get it. Instead I got a small bottle of 70% alcohol for 1$. On the bottle theres just a red label saying 70% DIL Alcohol and below that it says Outdoors Antiseptic. Can I use this to remove thermal compound? Can I use nail polish remover? I've seen many people say you should only use 90% or above but others say you just need toilet paper, nothing else. Help me, how do I do this >_<

This is what I got: http://imgur.com/AWPENiN

70% just has a higher amount of water, it will work in a pinch but not ideal. You can use other things as well, like acetone, even finger nail polish is fine. As for wiping it off, just make sure you don't leave behind lint or fuzz and it will be fine. Heck I've used brake cleaner before.

So are you suggesting that I use nail polish remover over the alcohol? Do you think toilet paper will be good to rub off the paste? Shit, I'm good when it comes to putting stuff together, but cleaning... argh

Could I do this while the CPU is inside the case?

Are you sure that alcohol is the right one? I heard some alcohols have stuff in them that could fuck up your processor. I'm guessing DIL means Distilled alcohol. Also how long should it take for the processor to dry?

It should be instantly dry. You should just put a tiny bit on the paper towel and rub the backside clean. Don't drip anything on the processor or motherboard.

Frankly, the risk of messing anything up is very low.

Thanks, I'm going to do it later today. I'll be picking up a CM Silencio fan at my local hardware store so I'll ask the guy there if he can give me any more info :D
