Hopefully you guys can help with this confusion. This is my first build, I have a powercolor r7 240 and a a68hm grenade motherboard, both said to work via pci 16x. After plugging everything in it says that the graphics card is running at 8x. This card is to eventually be run in dual graphics mode with my amd a8 7650k. Please help- just want to get this thing performing as advertised

Solution
As mentioned above ensure you are using the first slot. Secondly the option to change the speed at which the slot operates is available in the bios at boot up.

Lastly, the 240 will gain 0% performance operating at 16x as apposed to 8x. Frankly even @4x the 240 would not take a performance hit when running in a pcie 3 slot.

Do you happen to know how to do that in the bios?
