My son has completed his first build and it is up and running. However when he tries to play a certain game he gets a few minutes in and the computer turns completely off. Any idea why this is happening? Also he said the power supply is getting really hot. Two intake fans one out. Plus the CPU fan and two fans on the graphics card. 500 watt PSU. Guy at store said that'd be enough. He did have to find a secondary option for connecting the power to the graphics card. The motherboard did not have the correct connections. Had to adapt the two 6 pins to molex and one SATA.

What is the pc specs? List the psu brand and model.

Yes please let us know all of the parts of the build, include the PSU make and model too. It sounds like the parts selected might have some issues, especially the PSU.

List all of the parts.
If a psu does not have the necessary 6 or 8 pin graphics power leads, it likely is not strong enough to support such leads using molex adapters.
A cheap psu will often be misleading as to it's output capability.
500w may only be at peak, only at room temperature, or delivering most of the wattage at 3.3 or 5v, not at 12v where the cpu and graphics cards need them.
