Putting in a "real" network as our business is moving. We are a preschool, three classrooms, mainly wireless. Only about 6 wired ports, but I am building for expansion. Using a 6U equipment cabinet to hold the patch panel and main switch, both 24 port. Questions:
1) My plan was to put blank-patch-blank-switch-blank-power Would that be typical?
2) My cabinet has a fan mounted on the top. Can I expect much heat from such an underutilized cabinet. Router (airport extreme/time capsule) will be mounted on wall outside cabinet to facilitate better WiFi. My plan was to put DSL modem inside cabinet sitting on bottom. So only heat will be switch and modem. I would like to remove fan so cables can be run through hole in top of cabinet as it will be mounted on wall against ceiling and I figured since all cables are coming in from ceiling this would make a logical entry point. But if heat is going to be a problem... Also thought that if heat was a problem, I could mount fan on bottom of cabinet, but seems that would fight natural heat movement. Unless I reverse fan and blow into cabinet?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Solution
1. Order not critical since they can be moved, EXCEPT the patch, which will have a big punch of cables attached, and should be placed on top.

2. Hot air rises, so there is a static layer of hot air near the ceiling, hence, don't mount the cabinet right against the ceiling, leave a couple of foot (this also facilitates maintenance), and while I don't see a lot of heat from the equipment listed, I would leave the possibility of placing a fan on top if needed. You can drill another hole for the cable bundle.
