New video card + Old video card for dual monitors not working, but is it PCI-Express' fault?

Equipment:
*HP 8200 Elite Small Form Factor Desktop
*New GeForce GT 740 video card installed into the PCI express port
*Dual monitor setup which uses a switch between this HP machine and my laptop docking station
*2 monitors, both with VGA and DVI-I outputs

The 2nd monitor works properly still when I'm on the docking station, so we can leave that alone. The issue comes from the new video card having too new of inputs for my monitors, basically.

The video card has a VGA, HDMI, and DVI-D input. I'm running the primary monitor (from the switch extension cable) into the VGA, but there's nowhere to put this 2nd monitor cable, which is also running from the switch as VGA, but could still utilize the dual VGA-->DVI-I adaptor that it was using previously.

So my idea was to either buy a new adaptor, but I was told that's not possible to get the old tech to talk to the new tech (analog vs digital).

So, I thought, why not just reinstall the old video card (NVIDIGA NVS 300) which DOES have the DVI-I input, and just use that solely for the 2nd monitor when using this HP machine.

However, it doesn't work, and my only guess is that it's not using a PCI-Express port? Or does that even matter? Then again, I can't tell whether this other video card slot is indeed a PCI-Express one or not. There's another video card slot, but it's shorter than the other two.

Is there a way to make this work? I'm hoping I explained this all well enough!

Thanks! What does that mean as far as what I'm doing wrong or for my options?

I believe the pcie slot is working w my 740 card just fine as it's working great on the one monitor.
