My mac hard drive died. Computer is 2008. So that's that. But I saved my important files ( my paintings and manuscripts) on a Toshiba 1 TB external. I can't afford another MAC but I had access to a PC so I tried to retrieve. But the PC didn't even recognize the external, probbly because the external is Mac Formated. What can I do?

Welcome to the community, ACFAD!

Yes, most probably your external is HFS+ formatted which would make it appear only Devices and Printers on your Windows computer without being able to access it. You could use someone else's Mac to back up your data and re-format the external in exFAT/FAT32, so you'd be able to read/write from both Mac OS and Windows OS. Or you could also use the Windows-native NTFS, since now you can enable the write on such a drive in Mac OSX Yosemite and Mavericks.
If that is not an option though, you can use a third-party software as well to access a Mac-formatted drive from your Windows PC. I'd suggest you to refer to this thread for more specific suggestions on how to do it...
