How do you know if you need to apply thermal paste

My CPU is running hot and was wondering if I need to apply thermal paste.

Apparently it was applied recently by the original owner of this machine but maybe they didn't apply enough or something.

Can you tell from a visual assessment that the CPU needs paste?

Thank you for this answer

I am running E7500 Core 2 Duo. Readings are 100 degrees celcius under 100% load in Intel Burn Test. 60% load on Heaven Benchmark results in 80 degrees celcius. Normal idling in the 30s to 40s.

Stock cooler.

I had a similar problem to yours only recently. When gaming my temps were around 100 degrees celcius and underload around 70. I changed the rubbish intel stock cpu cooler with a noctua nh-u9s, applied new thermal paste and also added 3 case fans. Temps are 45-50 gaming and idle is around 30, both for the cpu and gpu

Thanks for these answers. I will probably apply some thermal paste. I would like to get an aftermarket cooler but I only paid £35 for the Mobo+CPU+RAM so unless I can pick up one for £5 I probably will just try the paste.

The case was open when I was doing this so it wasn't a lack of ventilation that was causing issues.
