My 4670k was running on the stock intel cooler with no issues as of 2 days ago.

I booted up RUST for the first time in about a year ( http://playrust.com/ ) on steam and cranked a few graphics settings. I noticed it was extremely jumpy and laggy so I checked my CPU temps. All 4 cores were maxed at 100% and around 100 degrees celsius with the fan at 100% speed. Needless to say I shut down the game ASAP and ended all other processes. The CPU remained at 100% load however.

I let it try to cool down for about 3 minutes but during that time neither the fan speed/cpu load/cpu temps changed. I had to just shut down the PC manually. I checked my heatsink and it was slightly dusty and the thermal paste was kinda dried out.

Yesterday I went and bought a coolermaster hyper 103 and installed it with fresh thermal paste. The computer was running cool at around 55-60 degrees under world of warcraft and google chrome load for about 20 minutes.

I booted up rust once again, it was running MUCH smoother for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes it ran up to 100% load, 100 degrees and wouldn't cool down despite shutting it and everything else down from processes.

Does anyone know what the heck is going on with my CPU??

I figure its one of two things
RUST might have some process that takes all my CPU (its in alpha)
My CPU is dead (Pls no.. im broke)

Solution
Well, friends... there come times in a mans life where he makes mistakes. Big mistakes.... :(

I have found from my research today that it is usually a good idea to take the plastic cover off the cooler before putting it in your computer.

Prime95 now maxing 55 degrees in 4thread torture test. :D

I'm sorry for wasting peoples time

I am using CoreTemp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
It stays around 60% use and 60 degrees and normal fan speed (medium RPM) then suddenly it climbs to 100% use and fan speed + 100 degrees within seconds.

After it does this, it will not go below this even if I shut down all my programs. When I reboot the pc it acts as normal

I only had time to play other games for about 20 minutes last night and they seemed fine. Ill be doing more testing this evening.

This seems like a major issue though? surely it couldnt be a bug in the game this big? It is in alpha though

World of Warcraft, Ultra Settings 20mins was about it, performed fine.

Ill try Dark Souls2, witcher 2 and some cpu heavy games later on.

Might also do some stress tests. Is there anything free I can use for a simple CPU load test?

In prime 95 4 threads its at 100 degrees in a matter of seconds, same with 2 threads where its around 90 degrees

Its heating up and cooling down extremely rapidly. Also Im idling at 3.6-3.7GHz which is really weird because this chip is supposed to run at 3.4GHz

It looks like your cpu is dead.
You sould send a rma request to the shop you bought it from and ask for a new one.
the 3,6 3,7 ghz could just be the standard turbo boost.
