I'm now building a PC for a friend and he wants to play at ultra settings 1080p 60fps. I know that 2 SLI gtx 970 will do that for games like the witcher 3, but for how long will it be able to handle those settings on demanding AAA games ?

His condition was that he doesn't really want to pour in anymore money for at least two years, but I thought, maybe one gtx 980 will do the job for now and he could just SLI it when need be and in the end pay less.

I'm still kinda new to PC building so I don't want to mess it up for my friend and I might not know what I'm saying..

Thank you in advance.

As kkaw said, you should be able to max out all the newest games released for atleast 4 years @1080p with that that setup.

Also, i might suggest getting a 980ti, as it is roughly the same gpu power, and price as sli'd 970s. But by getting the 980ti instead it uses much less power compared to the sli'd 970s, as well as leaving room for upgrading to sli'd 980ti's in the future

Just an estimation, around 4 years.

1080P, 60FPS is not very demanding for an SLI GTX 970.

I have 970 SLI for my 1440p monitor and expect to get at least two more years out of it, so like KKAW said, it should be good at 1080p for a good four years. It is highly unlikely that a single 980 will last that long at 1080p and capable of 60fps gaming and high quality/ultra settings.

And like mikey said above, if he has the budget for a pair of 970s, he should get the 980ti instead for the same price. I had a single 970 and then got a second one down the road. While happy, I'd prefer to have a single card solution if given the choice right now for the same money (not only less power usage, but less heat expelled out the back as well...great in winter, but not great in summer!).
