Hello,

I recently bought a new gfx-adapter for my PC, the Palit GTX 980 Super Jetstream. It has an Nvidia GTX 980 GPU. I bought the card mainly for using my new 4K-monitor, and light gaming from time to time.

I bought the card because in several reviews I read on the web I found that it is one of the most silent of its class. The adapter is also advertised with "0db"-feature, which means that the fans turn completely off for 2D/office-use.

I installed the adapter yesterday and I have the problem that the fans seem to run at full speed all the time. Immediately when I turn on the PC they start to run at full speed and this never changes, no matter what I do with the PC.

I use Windows 7 (64bit). I installed the original driver from Nvidia's site (353.62-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe). It seems to be the same file which can be downloaded from Palit's site.

I don't need any overclocking or other power-user features. I just want the card to be silent during normal use. I tried installing "Thunder Master", which is a OC-tool from the manufacturer. It shows me that the GPU Temp is 30 °C (which is low), and "Fan Duty" is at 0%. Still, the fan runs at full speed. You can manually set fan-levels there - none of which has any effect.

I'm happy for any ideas or advice about what to try. I'm not really sure if it's just a settings-issue or perhaps faulty hardware. I hope it can be fixed by correcting some setting or using software.

Thanks

So if you think the BIOS is faulty, is this something which can be fixed from my side (by reflashing etc), or should I RMA the adapter?

I would be interested in the normal behaviour of this card when the PC is turned on. Is it normally immediately blowing the fans with full speed and regulate to normal speed later when the OS is loaded? Or does it start quiet right from the beginning and is only blowing when really needed? Because if it's the latter, then my card is definitely defective somehow, because no setting in OS would change anything about it.

I looked for the BIOS for the normal Jetstream and it said it was a 3GB card, not going to risk that if they can't even get the title right. The cards fans come on when I turn the PC on, it gets to windows and they shut off as they should and stay like it, until I either set a custom fan curve in MSI Afterburner or let the card control its own fan, it stays normal until it hits 63c, then the fan starts pulsing on and off and the card gets warmer than it would normally.
I personally won't change the BIOS on my card because I don't fancy bricking it if it goes wrong, I've never done it before.

Thanks for your responses and help. For the record, I can report that I successfully fixed the problem. I removed the adapter from the chassis and took a closer look at the hardware. Indeed I found a connector, leading to the fans, which was not seated properly. I reseated it and voila - now the card behaves exactly like advertised. I'm happy!

I'm glad you've fixed your issue, where is the fan connector on our card? I did have a quick look a while back but I didn't notice it, did you have to take apart the card?

The fan connector was spottable from one of the sides of the card, but already covered under the hood. I could reach it without disassembling the card. The connector wasn't completely disconnected, just slightly diagonal.
