Buying a flagship cpu does it mean no upgrade path?

Hello

Im thinking about buying the i7 6700k when it releases but im afraid i will get stuck in the socket with no upgrade path
Now i have an a10-6800k its also a flagship cpu for fm2 and im stuck with it :/
But i have no experience with intel i have always been with amd bcs i had tight budget
Could somebody who has experiece with intel upgrading give some info for me?
Is it possible that intel will release a better cpu for lga 1151 later or no chanse?
Is lga 2011v3/lga 2017 better?
(Rest of the system :I have a gigabyte gtx 970 g1 gaming gpu and an xfx pro series 850w psu the rest i will change anyway
I do overclock
The computer is mainly for gaming (900p)+ video converting (hence i7))
I have like 800$

Thank you :)

Skylake is a 'tock' cycle processor (new architecture) so there will be a 'tick' cycle (node shrink and marginal improvements) to follow codenamed Cannonlake (which has been delayed). You're right though, a Cannonlake wouldn't really be an upgrade over an equivalent Skylake; from some dodgy benchmarks I saw earlier, my 4790k outperforms the 6700k but I can't remember who the source was.

The i7 will be a huge performance increase over the AMD APU. So I will recommend buying the i7 when it comes out. As for upgrading, people still use the i7 9xx so I wouldb't worry about it becoming obselete any time soon

Whatever Intel socket you buy into, by the time anything worth upgrading to comes along you will be 2-3 socket generations behind and have to upgrade the motherboard anyway, so there really is no point in worrying about having an "upgrade path" for the motherboard. As far as I am concerned, Intel has had no such thing in over 10 years.

The only people who have an "upgrade path" are those who buy low-end CPUs initially and upgrade to what they should have bought in the first place later.

Yeah, I can't remember where I saw it where the 4790k beat the 6700k at almost everything, which would make sense as Intel have spent a lot of time on Iris Pro and the iGPU in the 6700k is rumoured to be around the level of performance of a 560 Ti.It could be awesome with DirectX 12 using MultiAdapter with a dGPU.

Oh, and Skylake-S will be able to use both DDR3 and DDR4.

Than i will just stop worrying about an upgrade path :D
Just It was a terrible part of fm2

The igpu is a nice backup if your gpu needs some repairs or out of order for some time for some reason but i dont think i will use it much

Could the i7 6700k run this?

Just because they used the 8 core fx for the gameplay and i7 is 4 core hyperthreading right?

go for the I7 5820k socket 2011-3 I know its more expensive. but you will have ddr4 , a 6core i7 and a upgrade path to an 8core when needed.
But if it were up to me I would get an I5 with a good gpu. When directx 12 is out cpu's whont mater that much for gaming

I already have the gtx 970 its a good gpu
If i buy a server processor i would rather go skylake-e and lga 2017 but server processors are all very expensive :/

The i7-5820k is not a whole lot more expensive than the i7-4790k, so I would expect the i7-7820k (or whatever it gets called) to land relatively close to the i7-6700k. But Skylake-E is still about a year away, so it is not an option for people who want to build in the near future.

LGA-201x motherboard can be expensive though, but not a whole lot more so than enthusiast-oriented LGA-115x ones.

I can wait the a10 is prety good actually but still isnt a server processor a bit overkill? And i cant really push over my 800$ budget (for cpu mobo ram if ddr4 is needed)

Just another consideration, say you buy the i7 5820k 6 core on the 2011v3. Since intel cpus don't drop in price much if any, upgrading to an 8 core later would be the 5960x at around $1000 for the cpu alone. Is this a potential upgrade you'd consider? If not, then 'upgrade path' doesn't really apply to 2011v3 either. Not to say you couldn't but realistically if people are debating prices of 2011v3 vs lga1150 or ddr3 vs ddr4, they're not going to be likely to dump $1000 on a cpu.

As others have said, the only real upgrade path is starting off with a lower end cpu like an intel pentium anniversary or i3. Even an i5 has a partial upgrade path to an i7. It's no different from amd if someone buys an 8320 or 8350, their only upgrade is a 9590 which all 3 are differently clocked versions of the same cpu. Depending how much you do video conversion, an i7 4 core with ht is usually plenty. If not, the 5820k would be a good 6 core option near the same price range on the 2011. By the time an upgrade is necessary with intel cpus it's several motherboard socket changes down the road. You would already be using some of the fastest desktop cpus around with no need to upgrade. Or at least running no slower than anyone else with home pc's (not including heavy industrial cluster computing that home users doubtful have the budget or need for). At that point you'd be yearning for technology that simply doesn't exist in the home market or is so expensive it's not practical or within reach. (Most people don't have 10's of thousands of dollars to put into server grade equipment such as clusters, rack units etc nor the need for it.)

Skylake lga1151 has the potential to use either ddr4 or ddr3L (low power ddr3, not the same as standard ddr3). Which the manufacturer chooses to enable on their boards is up to them, I would bet most will be ddr4 with fewer being ddr3L and even fewer being dual compatible.

Thank you for your answer
As of video conversion i only want soething thats better in it than the a10 (not like the a10 is bad at converting just if i upgrade i want something thats better ;) ) before this a10 the only cpu i used was the amd sempron 2200+ if i remember correctly and the a10 is worlds better :) im not really considering lga 2011 v3 only 2017 or 1151 but as i saw lga 2011 v3 mobos are terribly expensive like 2.5 times their lga 1150 equivalent i suppose this will apply to 1151 and 2017 mobos the only reason im worried about an upgrade path is because amd fm2 had non over my a10-6800k but im starting to think the i7 6700k does not need and upgrade path soon xD

I actually can wait to lga 2017 but i see very little chanse i would buy one and why wait if it has no benefit?

The bigest reason i replace my a10 is it overheats for some reason i have the artic freezer 13 on it and kolink 4g thermal paste everything is applyed correcty the cpu is still around 70c if only use the cpu part and game and it overheats and turns off if i use the igpu too and game (dragon age origins and prototype 1 are tested with this) 33-36C idle

Otherwise this cpu would be plenty for me but as i heared intel tend to overheat less and if i buy it anyway i buy the best that fits my budget ;) that seems to be the i7 6700k

I will have to change my ram anyway too so i will go for ddr4
