Wireless router setup for campus dorm/apartment

My university's wireless internet connection is pretty bad and has gotten noticeably slower from the year before (apparently they're planning on increasing the bandwidth but not sure when that'll go down). Each room in the school owned apartment complexes has only one ethernet jack. When I hook up my laptop to the wall with a wired connection, I get a much better connection. However, I have multiple devices (laptop, xbox, etc.).

A friend told me that he set up a wireless router in his room (same apartment complex) so he could use the LAN ports and run all of his devices on a wired connection. If I were to purchase the TP-LINK TL-WR841N Wireless N300 Home Router, how could I set up my own network with as little suspicion as possible? I was to use it primarily just to hook up everything to it with wired connections, I could use my university's network for phone and tablet wi-fi. I have basic knowledge of how I would set it up: ethernet jack on the wall goes to WAN port on router and set up as an access point. However, I get lost when it comes to the settings configuration (can I turn off wireless mode and remain more incognito? also, something about turning off DHCP..). I'm currently running Windows 10 on my PC if that makes any difference..

Any help will be much appreciated!

I think this might be the perfect solution. Can a switch be at all detectable by my university IT?

Well..if it is supposed to be one device per port or room, then yes. They will see multiples.
Obviously, you are not the only person in that building wanting to have more than one device in their room. What is everyone else doing?

A switch may or may not work. All depends on what that ethernet port is connected to.
If that port only coughs up[ a single IP address, a switch won't work. You'll need a router.

Well that's the thing.. Most people just use the wi-fi here anyways. I think the room I was in last semester, the connection was particularly bad via wi-fi. How can I check how many IP addresses my port gives? It's just an ethernet jack on the wall, plug anything in and it'll give it internet, kinda like a router but not, lol. I'm skeptical about getting a router just because of the setup. I'm not the greatest when it comes to network ordeals. :/

2 options:
Ask your local network people
or
Buy a switch from somewhere with a really good return policy. Amazon for instance.
Plug it in and see if it works.
If it does, great.
If it doesn't, send it back.
