hi all, im building 2 offices computers for my parents business and i just want to know which cpu to get. this will be fore general document generation and will run a few property management programs. I know the i5 4460 is enough to handle anything in this catagory but i was wondering if it would be ok to go for the cheaper i3 4170.

on that note, i am an amateur builder, how do you compare CPUs? for a while i always thought that the more GHz and cores the better but if that were true then AMD should be topping the market hands down. Its got be a bit confused.

thanks in advance

Eh... CPUBoss is fine if you know what the specs mean. He states he's an amateur builder, CPUBoss is NOT the place to look for advice. They value clockspeed way too much, just as overclocking capacity (which he isn't going to do).

I would say, for general office use, that i3 will be fine. It's quick, not a quadcore, but that's not really necessary for simple office tasks.

Use the money you've saved to buy better peripherals or better monitors, or decent cooling (quieter).

That website, for all your CPU questions and head to head comparisons. As far as what makes a CPU good it comes down to a few things. GHz, yes, is one. But the number of cores, or brains, matters equally. And then it comes to things like Intels Hyper threading which makes the most use of each core, so it can be a dual core CPU and then be treated as a quad-core with the hyper threading.

Almost any modern CPU will do the job.

G3258
i3 4160 or i3 4170

Anything more powerful is more than you need.

AMD FX6300 (any less is not cost -effective)
A8 or A10 APU

To find out how to rank CPUs, you need to educate yourself or find benchmark chards and use them. (or ask us :) )
