Display won't initialise when connected to AV Receiver via HDMI

Ok, this is... kind of driving me crazy...

I'm experimenting with a living-room-gaming-PC-console-replacement, so I have my desktop up in the living room. It is hooked up via HDMI to my AV receiver (same as my console is, and my media center PC, etc).

I decided to move to the next level with it so I got a better GPU. I was running an ASUS Geforce GTX 760, and I replaced it with an ASUS Strix GTX 970.

Put it in the same slot as the old card was, plugged everything in, powered up - no video. Not even the POST screen. I tried all kinds of things, and eventually took it back down to my office where I managed to get it to start with a screen connected to one of the DVI ports. I then managed to extend the display to the other DVI port and the HDMI port. I then shut down, unplugged the DVI and rebooted with JUST HDMI - no problem.

Brought it back upstairs - no video. Not even POST.

Then I figured, hey, lets plug it into the TV. Did that, rebooted - works fine (well, overscan but still). Unplug from TV and connect to AV Receiver - no problem. Reboot - no video. And I mean ever - not even when it gets to the OS (it /is/ booting all the way).

Again, this setup works just fine with my old card, and with other PCs/Macs/Raspberry PIs/Consoles connected directly to the AV receiver (I mean, that's it's job).

Does anyone have ANY idea how I can fix this?...

Thanks!

ahh ok, then for sure you need active converter then.

I've actually tried that. Same result. ): I should've mentioned I tried that, I guess. I also switched between the new and old card many, many times...

some cards require active converters/recievers

I'm not sure what kind of converter you mean - can you tell me more/link to one?

Like I said, though, as long as I boot it up connected (via HDMI) to the TV or a monitor directly, and them /move/ it to the AV receiver, it works just fine. It just fails to, I don't know, initialise.

Active adapters have circuitry built in to the adapter and are usually powered.

your computer could be hanging due to the fact that it is seeing no display attached, thanks to the passive cable.

an active displayport to HDMI converter should do the job

I'll look into that - but like I said, the system actually boots normally. There's just no display. I know this because when I set it to boot into Linux I could ssh into the thing, and even start X Windows!

I got an Active HDMI Cable, and yup... works perfectly.

Before that I actually ran the thing through an HDMI Splitter I was using so I could record video off my PS3, and it worked then, too. But I'd rather not have to have something plugged in to an outlet :) Thanks!
