will a 60hz tv cause problems running games at over 60fps?

Hello. I am building my first rig. I just need a gpu and will be good to go. Looking to get a gtx970 or maybe a r9 390. Just wondering when games are pushing more than 60fps will that cause problems with my 60hz tv? Would a better tv or monitor be better or am I worried about nothing? Thanks for the input.

Solution
Hertz = cycles per second. So as far as any sort of display (TV, monitor, phone, gameboy) has a frequency, rated as hertz, which it refreshes itself, per second.

So your TV is 60Hz refresh rate. If your GPU is pushing out 75fps, those extra 15 frames will not be displayed as your TV will only refresh itself to a maximum of 60 times per second(60Hz), therefore dropping excess frames being sent to it from the GPU.

When you have this kind of fps overhead, it's (imo) best to enable vertical sync which will make it far more smooth than viewing 100+fps @ 60Hz. And virtually will eliminate screen tearing.

FPS in excess of 60 will not do anything to harm your TV.

games will appear smoother actually

only thing would be overheating on the 390, but if you have a good aftermarket cooled version it should not be an issue

^ exactly what he said ,I run a 970 on a sharp 60 inch led tv.
I have vsync set to adaptive in the nvidia control panel & then I set vsync to on in any ingame graphics menus - by far the most sensible thing to do .
Its absolutely pointles running any more than 60fpos on a 60htz screen imo - I am a firm unbeliever in runnig at anything more than 60fps- theres no way on this planet it makes anything look smoother & can create a very annoying screen tearing effect in most games.

It also keeps your gpu much quieter & much cooler - my 970 rarely goes above 60c while gaming.
