Laptop Has Two Memory Installed; Recognizes One or the Other, But Not Both

I have a (newish) Toshiba Satellite laptop (E45-B4100) that had 4GB of memory in Slot A and 2GB in Slot B.
Slot A: 4GB of memory
Slot B: 2GB

I purchased Kingston Technology 8GB 1600MHz DDR3L from Amazon and replaced as follows:
Slot A: 8GB of memory (Kingston)
Slot B: 4GB (taken from Slot A)

Now the laptop will recognize only 8GB of memory at start-up...or 4GB of memory at other start-ups. But it will never recognize both at the same time (with 12GB).

I tried blowing (canned) air around the slots, but that didn't work.

Not sure if relevant, but ever since I inserted the new memory, my laptop will occasionally shut down over night even if the laptop is closed...I guess it's still running in the background.

Appreciate any help...thanks!

Solution
The timings or voltage or both are not the same between the two memory sticks. For optimum stability you should have bought a matched pair of memory sticks.

Makes sense. I'll try that. Thanks!
