Its been about a year now since i had first bought the 970 and wanted to OC just to get that 10 % boost that i keep hearing about that makes it as if you had a 980.

So anyway i know for AMD there is the catalyst program that lets you OC an AMD card but i have no idea how to do it with an NVIDIA card, also is it safe to OC the gpu,i mean could it possibly shorten the lifespan of the card?

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

I use msi afterburner to overclock its the best in my opinion and it will work with a gigbyte card. I dont know if overclocking a 970 will make it as fast as 980 but you should get some performance boost. Just keep the card cool and it shouldn't shorten the lifespan, set up a custom fan profile in msi afterbunrer so you can keep the card cooler.

Hi buddy thanks for the response,so i downloaded msi afterburner, you think you can give me some numbers to start with as i don't really know how far i can go with the card, better safe than sorry you know?:)

I would boost the core clock in increments of 25-50 until it gets unstable when it does back off a bit, makes sure its stable and you are good to go Check out this video.

Ok so after allot of testing with Heaven Benchmark 4.0 i think i found a decent OC
With msi afterburner i set-
Voltage to + 87 (87 mV should be 0.087v if i'm not mistaken)
Power Limit to 112(max)
Core Clock + 150 ( if i go to 170 or higher GPU crashes)
Memory Clock + 500

At default with no OC i run the Benchmark 2 times,1st result was 55.8
FPS,second went to 59.8 for some reason.
With the OC settings i got 67.5 FPS with a score of 1701
Highest temperature the card got at one point was 78C but mostly under that.

So yeah this was my Overclocking experience,i'm happy with the results.

Not bad, did you set up a custom fan profile? You should be able to keep the card well under 78c if you do, the stock fan profile is optimized for silence not performance and in my opinion those stock fan profiles let the card get hotter than it should.

You can probably turn down the memory OC a bit if you want it may allow you to go higher on the core, overclocking the memory doesn't do much for performance in most games so I usually keep mine low. And im not sure how well the memory is cooled on your card so cranking up the memory speed that high may cause it to get pretty warm if its not cooled well, this could shorten the life of the card. So to be safe I usually keep my memory around +250 or so, I don't think the performance boost you would get from going higher than that is worth it.
