DVI (Graphics card) to HDMI (TV/monitor) not working

Hi all,

I'm having an issue connecting a DVI to HDMI from my computer's graphics card to my monitor, respectively. The graphics card is a EVGA 560 which has two DVI ports (model#: 02G-P3-1469-RX). The monitor is a Sony TV and monitor in one, which has three HDMI female ports but no DVI port.

Previously, I've been using a VGA w/ audio jack to VGA w/ audio jack, and connecting it to my computer via a DVI to VGA adapter. There have been some issues in the past with my display and I heard it was better to use DVI to HDMI for general sound, gaming, etc.

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out why the DVI to HDMI connection doesn't work. I tried restarting my computer, and that doesn't do anything. On my Sony monitor, I can change the input to TV, PC, and the other HDMIs, but selecting the corresponding HDMI input doesn't work either.

Should it be the other way around, in that the HDMI should be plugged into the GPU instead of the DVI? When I right click on the sound display and go to Playback Devices, I can see a playback device listed as "NVIDIA HDMI Output (Port 0)". Does that mean that the output connection from the GPU must be the HDMI?Any other thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Also...

When I connect BOTH the VGA and HDMI connections to the TV using both the DVI ports on my graphics card, both show up when looking at the Control Panel > Personalization > Display > Screen Resolution. It's the same single monitor, but the HDMI cable shows up as "Sony TV". So, it detects the HDMI cable, but it just doesn't show up, even if I go to change the input on the TV to HDMI 1.

When I set it to HDMI 1, it doesn't say "No Signal". It's just a black / blank screen. The other inputs which have no connection (e.g. "Video 1") says no signal. If I unplug the VGA, it will say "No Signal", as it should. So, I'm not sure why the screen is just blank.

Thanks for your response.

So, a DVI (on GPU) to HDMI (on TV) directly won't work by itself?

Or, is it just my specific graphics card that doesn't allow for it?

That's a good question. From what I gather from the online TV manual/troubleshooter in the link below, it can support the PC via the TV's HDMI input. It seems to be blaming the PC.

Specifically, it says: "Use a clone or duplicate output with 1080i if it is available on the computer. Some computers are not able to output an HDMI or HD signal in certain video modes." I'm not sure what this means though, other than HD may only be transmitted by the PC when the TV is on HDMI mode, and may not necessarily work when the TV is on PC mode.

These are what each of the HDMI ports on my TV does. I believe that I should be using HDMI 2 or 3, as HDMI 1 seems to only support video w/ no audio.

'' Use a clone or duplicate output with 1080i if it is available on the computer. Some computers are not able to output an HDMI or HD signal in certain video modes''

its that or the tv cant ??

like in my hdtv manual under specs it shows pc timings and a lot moer just for pc use - some hdtv's show good pc support some just say ''ya, hook one up '' and that's about it ? like mine covers things well

I downloaded your TV's manual and on page 17 it states in a foot note '' do not connect a pc to the hdmi input- use the pc in rgb [vga] instead when connecting a pc ''

then on page 41 sure seems a lot of ''does not's '' foot noted ?? but then it say's when the 1080p timing is applied to the hdmi - bla bla bla - and you check them settings as it says it all should work fine ??

it may just be one of the hdtv' that don't do pc well ? all I can say is set in windows display settings -vid card control panel for what the native hdtv resolution is [all set to 1920x1080 ] and re try

its like it tells you it can here then it cant there ??

I assume your using the full dvi to hdmi cable and not a adaptor ?

could be a bad cable ?? the adaptor thing tens to not do so good if at all

Yeah, I'll try that method. The resolution is both set to 1920x1080. Oddly, though, the recommended resolution for the HDMI says 1280x720, even though they're the exact same monitor! I used both resolutions and both resolutions work but it's just the VGA connection's resolution that's changing, since I can still unplug the HDMI and the video will still display.

I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable without any adapter. Maybe it is a bad cable, but when I plug the DVI/HDMI cable in, the monitor momentarily turns black and then back to my PC as if something is registering.

that's what I use a dvi to hdmi with the dvi into the card and the hdmi to the hdtv's I use here and they were all just easy plug and play issue free ??

one thing I just noticed is your cards part number has a RX in it that means its a refurbished card ?? could of been why it was sent back to start with ??

don't know man ?

I have a new graphics card on hand (EVGA GTX 960). I'm trying to see if this DVI to HDMI connection works before opening the box. But, it looks like I'll have to try the new card to see if it's a hardware issue with the GTX 560.

Oh, and, do you know if DVI should carry audio with it using my current setup? I don't see why it would not and it sounds like it's working for you, but I'm seeing conflicting details online. Thanks for all the help so far!

mine will, but you set that in the audio manager/audio devices /playback . click on the hdtv looking thing with hdmi - hi def audio device .. easy to do but its driver supported from the card so you would need to install the cards driver.

also properly uninstall the NVidia driver you running now [from programs and features ''do not use device manager'' its not supported by NVidia ] before you swap cards and the after you get the new card installed re install the driver you want to use

I'll give that a whirl. I'm sure it will work afterwards. Thanks for all of your help - I really appreciate it! :wahoo::)

Wait, I got it to work somehow with the cable and old graphics card!

I completely unplugged the old VGA connection and replaced what was in that DVI port with the HDMI/DVI cable. I connected the HDMI to HDMI 3 on the TV and used the DVI port, and the TV input is HDMI 3.

The color looks vastly different than what was on the VGA display. Maybe this is what it feels like to be TV color blind all these years with an analog display? I can't entirely tell if it's better, but the contrast seems really off or it may just take getting used to. I'm going to play around with the color settings to optimize it. But, I hope that this DVI to HDMI is better than DVI to VGA.

well digital is far better than analog as far as res and color so I can understand that .. [I still use old crt monitors and the flat screen digital display is eye candy compared ]

I bet when you swap to the 960 you may get some better eye candy too boot..

good luck and enjpy
