Hello. I have an old computer whose monitor would go blank randomly as if the computer was turned off. However, the computer appears to still be running -- I believe it randomly restarted. When this happens, I can turn off the computer by simply pressing the power button; normally, I would need to hold the power button. This has happened in normal use, in the middle of DBAN passes, and even when the computer is idle. Sometimes, when I boot up the computer, the monitor would remain blank. I would have to keep rebooting the computer until the display gets through.

A scan of the computer mentioned a CPU fan error, and this particular build has a notorious history of its CPU overheating, so I am going to replace its thermal compound. What concerns me is the monitor, which is connected directly to the GPU, staying blank even during boot-up. I believe there may be a problem with the GPU, and I was wondering how I would diagnose it.

UPDATE:

Motherboard: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO
CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 445
Memory: G.SKILL RIpjaws 4 GB x 2
GPU: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5770
PSU: LOGISYS PS575XBK
Storage: SAMSUNG HD103SJ 1 TB + SEAGATE ST3250310AS 250 GB
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate

The new thermal paste didn't work; the computer monitor still went blank in the middle of a DBAN pass. Though, the paste was a silicon-based compound from RadioShack.
