Hi forum. I recently purchased a few new components to put into my new build. I would like to start the build as soon as possible, but am unsure if this will cause any issues or not. I would like to use the old HDD from my previous build. I am aware that I may need to reinstall windows, but that should not be a problem since I have the 8.1 full version. I am switching from an AMD FX-8320 to an Intel i5-4690k. I purchased an MSI Z97A GAMING 6 as the motherboard. Would there be any AMD drivers that I would need to uninstall before making the switch to my new intel build? I would also like to implement an SSD into the new build for my boot drive. I will be keeping my old graphics card as well for the time being before I switch to a 980 ti.

Please reply. All answers are very much appreciated.

New hardware:
CPU: Intel i5-4690k
Mobo: MSI Z97A GAMING 6

Old hardware to be replaced:
CPU: AMD FX-8320
Mobo: MSI 970A-G46

HI

Ideally leave out old HDD , just new ssd and DVD drive

Install windows
Install motherboard chipset drivers

Then install old HDD

Otherwise windows setup may try to install boot files on old HDD instead of ssd

Are you adding a graphics card or using Intel integrated graphics card?

What psu are you using ?

If not using old HDD as boot drive no need to worry about drivers
If you want to try to boot from old HDD
Then remove any driver you find in programs & features

Then remove sata controller driver from registry

Fix HDC is found in Hirens boot cd and designed for XP but often works for vista and 7 may work with 8

Best advice re install from scratch unless too many missing program disks for expensive programs (Ms office etc)

Thanks for the quick reply!

I am using an r9 270 (rubbish haha) as my graphics card and I have a EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 power supply.

So I would basically just build the system without the HDD initially and then install it afterwards? would all my files transfer? And are you saying I only need to uninstall drivers if the old HDD was my boot drive?

If you do not format the hard drive you will have two instances of windows running and old data you do not want interfering. I recommend you backup your data and format the drive before you rebuild. Like Iron said you also don't want your AMD drivers causing problems with the new Intel build.
