CPU usage high but Task Manager doesn't detect it

Hello,

Recently I've been having trouble with my PC running slow while playing games. This started happening not long after i started playing the game ARK: Survival Evolved, I don't know how much this will have affected it but I added it in there just in case.

While playing games my FPS drops down really low. For example; I used to be able to play World of Warcraft at max settings at 60+ FPS, now it performs slow at the 2nd second and I have to run it on lowest settings with only 40 FPS. This happened from one day to another.

When I look in my Task Manager, it doesn't show anything. My CPU usage shows a normal 20 - 40% but when I use MSI Afterburner it shows me that my CPU Usage is up to 75 - 80% on all of my cores.

I have no clue why this is happening or what the cause was for it to happen.

The things I've already tried are: Restarting PC multiple times, disconnecting second monitor, cleaning dust from my pc and checked temperature (normal temperature).

I hope you guys can find any possible solution for this problem.

Thanks in advance,

Brecht

Hi Brecht, in task manager, do you have show all processes enabled? Also, what are your temperatures?

All processes are enabled and temperatures are normal, usually 34 - 40°C. I've done a couple of tests including Crystal Disk Mark and Memtest and scanned for Malware using Spybot. Nothing was found so the problem doesn't seem to be with my physical components (CPU, RAM and SSD)

1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"

The problem is not with the running programs, whenever I start a game that should run well on high settings my CPU usage goes up all the way to the top, even without any other programs running

Make task manager display kernel times, from menu. Typically on normal high CPU usage, the kernel execution should be 10% -20% or maybe 30% max.

If it's way above, it means the system is executing a lot in kernel mode, processing driver code. Which could be a new device with bad drivers doing a lot of IO, or old hardware going bad. Typically a drive because they do a lot of IO. Sometimes wireless network can cause it.
