At work we have a Synology DS1511+ NAS. It has made a bit of noise intermittently, but when I got in today it sounded like someone was munching on ball bearings. So far it does not appear that performance has been affected, and all users are still able to access their data. What is the procedure for tracking down which hard drives are on their way out? Is there something to be done within the Synology interface? Or taking each individual drive out and using one of those SATA to USB interfaces to access some data the way to go?

Backup your data ASAP.

A stethoscope is useful for finding the problem drive. Or the cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels.

You can not extract data from individual drives unless the NAS config is RAID1.
