What is your budget, Jedi is right it is a bit outdated? Of course there hasn't been a refresh to speak of on the FX line it seems AMD abandoned the enthusiast CPU segment.

the only way your getting 60FPS on any games that came out this year is if you're on low settings, with that GPU

unfortunately, for running current/new games at decent settings, i would recommend spending all of your budget on a GPU. obviously, you cant really do that.

my first build was the R9 270x and an FX 6300, and i quickly realized that i should have waited on the GPU. it will run current games, but not at the frames and quality that you want. after less than a year, i bought an R9 290x

i think you can get a r9270x 4g card for ~$150? save up, spend another $150 and you could go up to a R9 290x or 390 or GTX 970, which is the minimum i would recommend for new games @ 1080p. you'll just end up getting tired of compromising graphics quality and upgrade soon anyway

I'd save up and add another $100 to your budget, get an i5/gtx 960.

AMD doesn't really have a good gaming solutions like they used to. APUs are not good gaming CPUs, and the upgrade path isn't so good.

its hard to recommend the GTX 960 when you can get the 970 for ~$100 more and get a significant increase in performance. IMO 970/290 is the minimum i would say for current high end games (witcher 3, GTAV) and future games @1080

saying that theres a cheap 280x on newegg at the moment - wheteher thats viable depends on the quality of his 500w psu - there is nothing wrong with an 860k/280x combo though - its a very well performing combo at the price.

im sure there are ppl who are fine compromising quality settings on their games. im not one of those people. and a large reason that people get into custom gaming rigs is for superior graphics, resolution, ect. if you're impatient and are ok with console quality, go ahead and get a 960 or 280x.

True you can go with an entry level H81 or a low-end business chipset like a B85, I offered the H97 for $79.89, so he could always upgrade to the newer Devil's Canyon models later if he wants to. They are faster and run cooler then the pre-refresh models and run about the same price.

I don't know if I'd put the graphics offered by the APU in the consoles as equal to the GTX 960 or R9-280x. The games that are designed for them will look good on them. The issues are when the game developers port them over to PC versions they do a quick and dirty job so they require more resources to run. A game designed to take full advantage of the GTX 960 and r9 280x would never be able to run as well on a console.
