my ps4 doesn't get any audio because the speakers are plugged in to my PC instead of my monitor (i would plug it in my monitor but it doesn't have 2 hdmi ports meaning my ps4 is connected through hdmi and my pc through dvi so it can't carry audio.) i'm wondering if i get a hdmi to dvi cable, would it carry audio from both devices? so i would put the hdmi cable into my PC and the DVI end into my monitor, would it carry the audio?

Solution

Have you considered an A/B switch? Basically a button that switches which device sends the signal to the TV. This way you could run both off of HDMI and still have just one HDMI input.

or...

This is wrong. I have a 25 foot HDMI to DVI cable and it does carry audio. Now because of the equipment I have the only direction I tested this is the DVI off of the GPU and the HDMI connected to the monitor/TV.

Answer is "YES" they will But I am unsure if all do. So do some more homework before your purchase.

yes it will but card driver supported I believe with its hd audio at least all mine do [amd]

A DVI-D source can output HDMI signals including audio (e.g. ATI 3000-series and NVIDIA GTX 200-series). Some multimedia displays use a DVI to HDMI adapter to input the HDMI signal with audio. Exact capabilities vary by video card specifications.

then it should but when you install the driver one of the things listed in the driver pack is the NVidia hi def audio driver and with it installed it should be fine but I see there not as clear on that as amd . hmmmmmm

I just seen your tag for playstation 4 and I was looking there and there not too clear on that for its use ?? [most time that means no when they don't directly answer with a simple yes or no ]

I guess I need to do some home work on these NVidia cards

sems like a common thing these days if it don't I would be real surprised on that

i will definitely consider this, thanks

He is not saying he is going to DP. In fact he did not say DP at all. And I have never seen DVI carry audio from the video card to the monitor. I also spent a bunch of time researching something last week on DVI, and I never saw anything about audio being any part of the spec.

normally DVI to DVI does not, but DVI to HDMI will. This is a documented fact no matter what information you may have read. Maybe it is possible you only read up on DVI-i to DVI-i and DVI-d to DVI-d cables and did not read on DVI-d to HDMI cables. This could be where the info was missed.

OP's question " i'm wondering if i get a hdmi to dvi cable, would it carry audio from both devices?

Answer is "Yes these cables will carry audio.

@ OP If you plan on having a DVD player also or other devices with HDMI they make larger A/B style switches that can accommodate 5 or more HDMI devices. Before your purchase please consider what you may do in the future to try to save some money in the long run.

yes it has to be dvi to hdmi cable

I guess from there 5 year old thing here it says newer card from that time does support it -- but I think it still needs driver support and a dvi to hdmi cable [ adaptors may not work as I have found ]

''The audio can be carried over DVI to HDMI cable depending on the graphics card. For newer GPUs, you just need to set the HDMI audio device in the Windows Sound control panel. [same as amd ]

I find it a bit annoying how tight lipped Nvidia is on some info that the enthusiast and builders really do look for. Some times for Nvida you need to scower data sheets and still not find the answer. Nvidia has great power consumption but for specs and released data I will have to give a nod to AMD.

$15 is little more than i planned to use, but it does look very useful and so i will consider it

I didn't look for the best or cheapest, all I really wanted to do is give a visual and idea. If you search around you may find one cheaper that will fit you budget better.

I didn't think so either, but I got two new ASUS monitors, the cable was DVI to HDMI, going from my docking station to the monitor. Audio DID play out of the monitor.

Of course, this is probably an HDMI monitor with a DVI end, but it did play audio through the DVI output of the docking station.
