I understand, this question has been asked a gazillion times. Believe me, I've scoured the forum and every time I set my mind on a recommended graphics card, reading the next thread changes my mind.

I'm on a budget ($350-$400 max) and I'm desperately in a need of a graphics card to support my 1440p monitor. I might bite on a future 4k monitor deal if I find one, and if I do, I just want the games I like playing (Far Cry, Crysis) to be playable.

I have my eyes on a short list of graphics cards:
GTX 970
GTX 980
GTX 780 Ti
R9 290x
R9 390
R9 390x

I found the 290x for $200 and I was very close to taking it but I checked the 1440p benchmarks and 30fps isn't going to cut it for me.

I don't know a lick about the 780 Ti.

The 390 and 390x are close in price to the 980. Which is better for me? I'm not a competitive gamer but I do want a smooth experience. The price of the 390 is attractive. Should I bite on it? Between the 390x and the 980, which is better suited for my specifications?

The AMD cards generate a lot of heat and my computer just doesn't have sophisticated cooling
assembly available.

Thank you,

Perplexed Buyer

The 980 Ti would be all I would need. The 980 on the other hand is north of $400 and given that the R9 390 is $100 cheaper, hesitation and confusion ensues.
