So I have an old late 2006 iMac that's just been sitting around and I'm planning on selling it so I went ahead and went into Disk Utility to perform the "Erase Free Space" task. However Disk Utility froze and so I had to force quit resulting in the temporary file remaining on the hard drive and as a result I only have about 200 KB of free space. I've tried locating where this file may be but I can't seem to find it to manually delete it so I'm left with the only option to reformat the disk wiping everything off of it and reinstalling the OS.

HOWEVER, the OS that is on the computer is 10.4.7 Tiger and as such I've heard that I need the install disk (which I lost years ago after this computer got shoved into the garage and forgotten about) where as newer OS X don't require you to have the install disk. Is this true? Do I need the install disk? Please I need to know as soon as possible so I can get this computer sold.

Specs:

Model: iMac5,1
Processor: 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Hard Drive: WDC WD2500JS-40TGB0 250 GB

Solution
You need the install disks. You should be able to find them on eBay, but be sure to buy either a retail copy or disks intended for your specific model. Install disks supplied with a different model of Mac almost certainly won't work in your computer.

Alternatively, just sell it "as seen" and leave the problem of reinstalling an OS to the buyer.

Well I have no money to buy a replacement disk so does that really mean I just wipe the Hard Drive and leave it at that then? Not to sound like a childish brat or anything so I apologize but that's BS. I'm hating Apple more and more every day now. :(

You're blaming Apple because you lost your install disks? That seems a little unfair.

I suspect that if this was a Windows machine you would have lost your install key along with your install disks (if you had been supplied with any install disks in the first place), so would be in a similar situation.

I'm blaming Apple for intentionally making this iMac model not serviceable. Besides this isn't even my computer. If it was then I would've kept better care of where the disk was.

The iMac is perfectly servicable. You just need the tools that they supplied you with to service it. Exactly the same is true of Windows computers except that you are often not supplied with the tools in the first place.

Just install Linux on it and put it down to experience.

When I mean serviceable i mean serviceable through Apple, not through the individual who owns the computer. When I brought this into Apple stores to try and get it serviced in the past I was told by several Apple technicians that my specific model was non-serviceable and that they could do nothing to help me and that I would need to contact some random third-party repair shop that is in no way connected to Apple.

Anyways the computer isn't even letting me wipe the hard drive so now I don't know what to do.
