Hello,
I have already purchased these items for my first build:
asus x99-a usb3.1
Intel 5280k
DDR4 Dominator platinum 16GB
Samsung 850 Pro 256GB
corsair hydro series H110i
pioneer BDR 2209
corsair 780t case
I still yet to purchase the GPU (EVGA 980ti) and i have put off buying the PSU because i dont know which one.. Was leaning towards the Corsair HXi 850i but heard it wouldnt be enough and that corsair's PSU's make an ugly noise.
Please can someone recomend me a quality PSU to match up to my system, thanks

Hey there,

Great build! I have the same mobo/cpu as you do and it AWESOME.

I will say that a 650W PSU is absolutely the lowest I would go -it may be as low as you can go- that all depends on if overclocking CPU/GPU and/or placing other deices on the bus that use power.

On my system with the CPU/RAM and 1 GTX 980 all with a MODERATE overclock - Just those components alone can get my TPD over 400watts -leaving for what in my honest opinion is NOT enough overhead- if i had a 650W PSU. I have a 1200W..and I plan on having 3 way-SLI eventually. More is not always better. Its all about quality AND quantity

Although you would probably be just fine with 650W and 1 GTX, but if you plan to upgrade/add-card (of any PCIe type) you may run into power issues.

I would got with the HX850i 850w, then you could add another GTX 980 without upgrading your PSU.

NEVER skimp on the PSU, unstable power can lead to the MOST frustrating issues.

Happy gamin' an encodin'!

Thanks, i was thinking about the upgrading issue, im not into overclocking or anything like that because i heard that it reduces the longetivity of the component. But i wouldnt mind changing or adding parts in the future. When you said 850w for the reason being if i decide to add another 980GTX it came as a surprise that 850 would surfice for a pair of these cards + the rest of the hardware.

I am now looking into the seasonic 860 platinum.

I will be using this computer for about 5/6 hours a day for mostly gaming.

Yeah honestly 850W is as low as I would go period. Yeah, with 2 GTX + rest of hardware you would be pushing especially if you had alot of other addin-cards you would be okay.

A lot of people are concerned and all about saving energy -which is awesome and all and I applaud thee!- but I want my FPS at max and my rig to sound like a jet if it needs to. That being said; here are some links to some 1000W (a nice, round, enough-but-not-overkill amount of power) that are as great quality and same price range as the 860: Platinum grade and Gold, respectively.
