Hey my friend installed his new CPU and CPU cooler and RAM but now he only gets cpu_led when trying to boot. No post, no boot, nothing.

We have tried testing with another PSU, we have tried putting in old RAM, we have tried clear_cmos and none of these worked.

When he installed the old CPU and RAM together he got BOOT_DEVICE_LED.

he has checked bent pins and says there was no bent ones.

Please help!

EDIT: Installed newest BIOS still not working and still showing red light on CPU_LED

What is your MOBO? CPU_LED is just a code for the cpu error led.(LED= Light Emiting Diode), so if something is wrong with the CPU it will glow. The same thing goes for the BOOT_DEVICE_LED.Just, something is wrong with the boot device, could be a MOBO problem too.
Check if all cable are plugged in.And the 8 pin connector is connected.

Try clering the CMOS.And check if all cables are snug and tight. If all else fails look here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-1753671/bench-troubleshooting.html

1) Reset the bios (clear CMOS - short the pins and/or pull the battery)
2) Make sure the RAM is in the correct slots for the number of slots you're occupying. Make sure the RAM is properly seated.
3) Did you make sure the new CPU you installed was supported by the BIOS that is currently on the MOBO? If not, did you try updating the BIOS to the latest version?

Lastly, give ALL specs on the build, CPU and type, mobo and type, bios version, RAM types etc. details, details, details... :)

This CPU_LED is a way diagnostic the CPU.These types of LEDs on MOBOs are called POST State LEDs.The POST State LEDs provide the status of these key components during POST: CPU,RAM,GPU and HDDs.If an error is found the LEDs light up and stay on, until the problem is fixed. So your CPU is dead.

I dont really know what to do anymore, we've tried everything... The only thing I can think of now is that we have to go from BIOS version (i.e) 1->2->3 and not jump from 1->3 as we did...

Betaversion 2004
Description Z87-A BIOS 2004
Enhance compatibility for new Anniversary Edition and Devil's Canyon CPU.
Note: Must apply the attached BIOS updater tool first before using the new Intel 4th Gen Core processors

this is one of the older ones

and we are using this one but a newer version

Version 2.00.02
Description BIOS updater for New 4th Gen Intel Core Processors
Before using the new Intel 4th Gen Core processors, we suggest that you first download the BIOS updater for new Intel 4th Gen Core Processors and then update the BIOS using this tool.

we are using this version but that is just the last one with some tweaks.

4790k, found this and following the steps, might solve it exactly what I thought do.

Hi guys I'm new to the forum and have never answered a question before but I think I might be able to help.

I had the same problem with my i7 4790k on a Maximus VI Gene, Q Code 00 and CPU_LED red but only when restarting the computer. First of all, it's not a hardware problem; you don't need to check connections or the cpu socket.

It's a BIOS problem. Now, the ASUSTeK support page shows all the BIOS updates. At first I updated to the latest BIOS version (1603 for the Gene), but the problem was still there. Then, I downloaded the latest version that includes the BIOS 4th gen processor updater (which is 1505 for the gene). I downloaded Intel ME Driver version 9.5.15.1730, link:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/23276/Intel-M...

I launched the updater, which downgraded the BIOS to 1505, but the problem was solved. My computer restarts perfectly. So I looked at the BIOS updates for your Z87-A and recommend that you downgrade your BIOS to 2005, because it comes with the updater. Don't use ASUS Easy Flash 2 Utility because It'll update your BIOS, but it wont launch the updater, which is what allows the 4th gens to work.

There are no instructions or readme files for the BIOS 4th gen processor update, which is ridiculous, so here is a step by step.

1.
Download 2005 BIOS update with 4th Gen Processor update from here:
http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/Z87A/HelpDesk_Downl...

2.
Unzip, then unzip the zip inside (the bios 4th gen updater)

3.
Launch update.exe. When it says "select BIOS file" point it to the .CAP which is in the first zip file.

And that's it. Please respond if this works, I'd love to know that I helped. Sorry for the rambling solution. :D

we downgraded bios so we went from i.e 1->2 instead of last time 1->3 as it apparently the "3rd patch" didn't have the things included in the "2nd patch"

My computer SPEC :

PSU : Cooler Master 650W
Motherboard : Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
RAM : Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3 (4GB x 2)
GPU : MSI GTX 970 ( 1 month old)
CPU : AMD FX-4350
Storage : Kingston SSD 120GB
WD 2TB
Seagate 2TB

The windows is in SSD. I have faced this problem for 1 month but no solution. And the problem started after 2 weeks i change to the new GPU.

My problem is :

- suddenly no display and no POST in game BUT the timing of no display is vary starting from 5 min up till 4 hours in game.
- during no display what i notice is CPU_LED on my motherboard is ON.
- BUT after some time the computer can reboot itself like normal if i just let it be and the timing also vary from 5 min up to whole night.

What i have done to fix this issue :

- Reset the CMOS
- Update BIOS
- Check bent or damage pin of CPU (no problem)
- No overheat sign ( max 65 celcius in game) both CPU and GPU
- Thermal paste CPU is ok
- Reassemble all components
- Change memory slot
- Replug all the power cable
- Reseat the GPU and other components
- Run PRIME for 24 hours
- Send this desktop to IT technician but no problem so the effort in vain
- I even play Batman in front of him for 1 hour but no problem because the timing vary.
- Run 3D Mark Vantage to test GPU and CPU (The GPU Test is okay but the CPU Test sometimes ok and sometimes not)
-Reformat windows
- Reinstall game in other hard drives

Please help me, if you need more information i will tell. For now, i think this is what i have done to fix the problem. Is it because of CPU or PSU? I have checked the motherboard manual. For Onboard LEDs, in this case CPU_LED is on. This is what the manual says.

"POST State LEDs. The POST State LEDs provide the status of these key components during POST (Power-On-Self Test): CPU, memory modules, VGA card, and hard disk drives. If an
error is found, the critical component’s LED stays lit up until the problem is solved."
