Flash drives not showing up in "My Computer"

Whenever I connect a flash drive to my laptop, it plays the sound of it connecting, and sets up the flash drive program, but it does not show up in "My Computer" or Disk Management. However, when connecting a mouse. it will work, and smartphones also show up when connected.
I am using a Lenovo z40 on windows 8.

That typically means the flash either needs to be formatted, or already formatted in something Windows doesn't like. If flash contains no data, attempt to format it under STORAGE MANAGEMENT. If that doesn't work, use DOS tool DISKPART to erase current partition. DISKPART TOOL can be dangerous, so make sure you know how to use it.
