Hi there,
I'm in a dilemma between Zotac Nvidia gtx 550Ti 1GB and Msi cyclone edi Radeon 6850 1GB.
I currently have a system with CPU Intel quad core Q6600 and GPU Nvidia 8600GT. I know that my CPU and GPU are very old and CPU is passable but GPU is very very weak so I've decided to upgrade the GPU. Since I'm out of budget to buy a decent GPU one of my friend has asked me to use his old GPU. The problem is he has 2 GPUs and I can take one of them and they are Zotac Nvidia gtx 550Ti 1GB and Msi cyclone edi Radeon 6850 1GB. Now, I saw benchmarks and all of them favour the Radeon 6850 over 550Ti. But I looked at the features of 550ti that it's going to support DX12 in the new Windows 10 and it has support for Dynamic Super Resolution too (DSR) too.

So 1st question is will the 550ti going to produce good results in FPS in DX12 mode?
And the 2nd question, is it worth to use DSR on 550Ti since it's not that strong GPU?
and final question is which card will be better for me, I play at resolution of 1440X900 med settings and I don't mind playing at lower resolution too. I'm moderate gamer. And yes I would like to play gta 5, COD modern warfare, battlefield 4.

Regards.

Nvidia will give DX12 support to all their DX11 based card. For AMD only card based on GCN architecture will get DX12

Performance wise 6850 is simply the better choice. DSR while supported by 550ti the gpu itself is weak. So it is most likely you can only use DSR with old games....even so not all games support DSR. because if I understand it right the said games still need to support higher resolution for DSR to work. And some games simply not working with DSR (Alan Wake). About DX12 even if the game take advantage of DX12 for cpu overhead reduction 6850 probably still come out on top. The gap between the two is just too big. Now there is this misconception that DX12 will make mid range/ low end gpu perform much...

Now there is this misconception that DX12 will make mid range/ low end gpu perform much faster as long as the game use the API. if we look at what Mantle do with it's cpu overhead reduction that's is not the case. What the API did was reducing cpu overhead so high end gpu did not get too bottleneck when pairs with sloe cpu. It did not make gpu significantly faster than it is in DX11.

Thank you deathrabit and renz496 for the help here. So it looks like I'm going with the Radeon 6850 card. I would like to ask one more thing. My monitor has D-Sub, DVI-D ports. I used to run my 8600gt with D-Sub(VGA) port. I checked the Radeon 6850 on MSI's website and it doesn't have VGA port it only has DVI-I port.

Here is the picture of my monitor's port:

and here is the picture of graphics card's port:

will this card work with my monitor's DVI-D port? If so which kind of cable (Dvi-D or Dvi-I) i'm supposed to buy ?

I will buy a new DVI cable but is the DVI cable classified into two categories, which are DVI-I and DVI-D? If yes, then which DVI cable should i get?

I don't want to use a converter. Can I use DVI-D 24+1 pin in the Graphics card? but it looks like graphics card has DVI 24+1+4 pins?

Hello, I actually have both of the cards. The 6850 is more powerful and uses more power. The 550Ti is a great little card. It doesn't have the horsepower of the 6850 but it uses little power, runs very cool, and is super reliable. I have hundreds of hours on both of them without any isues. For the gaming part I think the 6850 will be better. Best of luck and enjoy!
