So my gigabyte mobo got damaged slightly recently, the top PCI-e 16 lane got shorted and Im using the second slot on my Z68 mobo. Im debating between getting a new mobo or jumping ship to a new chip possibly. I mostly use my rig for gaming and I run my cpu at 4.2ghz with 1660 ddr3 and an AMD 280X.

I have been doing game development work lately as well in Unreal 4.

So Im looking to spend between 50 to 150, and ebay isnt off the table for me either. I would like to however get something that gets me full potential out of my CPU if I stay with my 2500k (which I love lol) so I am open to suggestions.

is your rig is running fine and your getting full performance off the lower 16x slot without any gpu heat probems?

yeah its a bummer not having a perfect motherboard but functionally it seems cosmetic. ebay would be your best bet for any z68 or z77. you should be able to find one for $50ish. otherwise a full skylake cpu+mobo upgrade will require ddr4 ram as well and you likely looking at at least $400.
Hello you have a 1155 'K" model CPU... You need either a Z68 or Z77 for CPU OC. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1155

The Prices has gone up and the availability of " NEW" seems dried up On EBAY and my other sources, at this time. If you chose to go re-furbished I would first contact the MB Companies website for their method/place of retailing them... as their Warranty would be easier to RMA then.

Your probably right, it is cosmetic since I am getting full speed on my GPU atm and running a comfortable 4 ghz. Though I want to find a board that gives a good high stable overclock, I get up to about 4.2 on my board (even before the short) and it runs into some issues so I would like to get it up to 4.5-4.7 ghz to close the performance gap on newer chips (even though IM not gonna get the extra threads lol)

you can see my rig in the lower right here.

my gigabyte board is about as budget as a z68 can get and i have no problems running 4.5ghz. from my perspective it comes down to vcore. every chip is different and even if you have a great motherboard and an awesome power supply, you simply cannot pass a certain vcore without running risks. even a budget board can supply 1.40v without issues as long as you have a decent power supply and awesome cooling.

what cpu cooler are you planning on running? i have a very simple hyper 212 plus. i run 1.312v@4.4ghz(summer oc@75c) or 1.344@4.5ghz(winter oc@75c) which i personally consider my maximum for prime95 v26.6. if i had something like a phanteks/noctua 120mm cooler i could run 0.1ghz higher, with a dual 140mm setup i could definitely run at least 0.2ghz higher and push toward 1.40v. but for me its just not worth the extra money and extra vcore.
