ASUS STRIX GTX970 graphics card prohibiting my computer from booting up

I need help when I call support lines they tell me multiple thing. One of which is that my power unit is too small and the other is that maybe I have a faulty card.

Full system specs.
2x8gb ddr3 cosair vengeance ram
2TB 7200 HHD
250G Samsung SSD
ASUS z97-a motherboard
ASUS STRIX GTX970
XFX 650WPRO PSU
INTEL i7-4790k

Well no one told me the obvious so I spent quite a while troubleshooting before I figured out that you need the hdmi cable plugged into the newly installed graphics card, not the motherboard. This was a obvious answer once I figured it out but as someone who is first building their pc I never knew about this
