updating to windows 10 and get message <nvidia ge force 7900 gt/gto not compatable with windows 10>

What can I do?

Try to install driver 307.68, some people had success with Geforce Go 7000 series, maybe your 7900GT will work too.

You can upgrade using the media creation tool
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

The display won't be ok, but then install the last driver (309.08) and enjoy

if it doesnt work what more recent video card would be appropriate?

Just run the installer and see if it works.

As for a new card, it depends on your needs.
