These are my specs: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Tnjd23

To explain the sound a bit more: it sounds like a CD is starting to be read (i don't have any CD in my PC)

I just upgraded my motherboard from a cheap msi 760gma-p34(fx) to a ASRock 990 FX Extreme6 ATX AM3+ Motherboard, and I have realized that the sound does not happen when it is starting up but when it first goes to the desktop screen. Does anyone have an idea what this could be? Could it result in damage to any PC parts?

NOTE: I currently have my AMD FX-9590 underclocked to 4.5 ghz.

My two thoughts would be if you're using a HDD for storage, it could be that, or it could be a fan (from the GPU to a case fan). Try taking the side of your case off, power on, and listen to see if you cant better pinpoint where it's coming from. Depending on what it is different things could be damaged currently, or more severely if not addressed. If the HDD is making the noise, back up all your data ASAP and look for a new drive. If it's a cooling fan, look into replacing it. If it's the GPU, see if it's under warranty to replace it.

Also, with the fans, make sure you don't have a cable laying against the fan, you know something to the effect of a baseball card in your bike spokes or pushing the fan against the bearings. While installing the new mobo, something may have shifted which is why I suggest a fan. When you open it up, keep it in the same position that you run it in (keep it up right, or on its side, however you normally have it).

It definitely sounds like it's coming from the PSU. I can tell that from just hearing by the bottom of the case in the back. I really hope it's the fan in there and not it itself...

All things considered, a PSU would be a cheap replacement, but one that could end up serious. Last thing you need is the PSU going bad and zapping the board or something. Your PSU is listed as $25, so I would say grab another and replace it to see if the noise disappears. Or look at getting a better rated PSU that might be made better like an EVGA G2.

Sorry for a late response.

I still have the same PSU in it, I haven't been able to grab a new one. I felt like I should note that the noise is more of a buzzing noise and it changes pitch quite a bit. I should also note that the noise appears to go away while playing games such as PayDay 2, and a few other CPU/GPU intensive games. I've been doing research and I've seen that some people were having similar noises from their Corsair PSUs, and that it was simply just a coil in the PSU vibrating and it does not cause any harm to the PC or PSU. Could that be the case in a Thermaltake one?

Also, I may have said this before, but I bought the PSU because it was the best one at my local Best Buy. I also bought it for $50. I have now decided to never shop at bestbuy again for PC parts, primarily because they were the one that sold me the GPU, the PSU, and the ram. The ram has failed once so far (This is the second set of ram from them because the first was bad), the PSU is cheap, and my GPU was way overpriced. (Plus it was the best one under $500)
