I received a late 2008 Mac Pro tower. 2 Xeons with 21 gb ram. The current boot drive is faulty. It may just be the image its running off of, but when I boot into OSX its just a blue screen and the top tool bar. Using the top tool bar I am able to run some applications, like chrome. I've tried lots of fixes, but I've decided to go out and buy a new 500gb HDD and reflash a new OS on it. I have a couple windows PC's I can use to access the new hard drive and push files to it, and I can get my hands on another mac if necessary. Is this possible? How can I do this.

Also... my understanding is I can't install any version above..... 10.6.8? I would also like to know more about that if anyone knows anything about that. From what I read its due to the graphics card that's in the computer. Its not powerful enough.

I can provide any further info if needed.

Thanks

What's the problem with just installing directly on the MacPro?

You can't use Windows PC to do this. You might be able to use an identical Mac Pro, but what's the point?

A 2008 Mac Pro should be able to run Yosemite.
