I have a seagate 1TB HDD which I have been using for the last 5 years without any issue. Recently, The HDD just stopped functioning - no power (since the lights aren't coming on) and is not being detected by the laptop.
Not sure if the HDD has crashed or is it just a power adaptor issue.
I generally use this to watch movies/ pics on my TV or laptop (run by windows OS)

Request your expert advice for a solution to this and on how can data be retrieved if the HDD is no longer usable.

Hey there, sunnair. Welcome to the community.

I assume that the drive is out of warranty as you've mentioned that you've had it for 5 years, so I'm not sure if you'd be able to RMA it as @rounakr94 metioned.
Now for the troubleshooting part. I'd recommend that you try the HDD with a different power adapter and/or USB cable and a different computer if possible, to see if the same thing happens. If it still doesn't power on, the only thing you can try is to take the HDD out of its enclosure and connect it to a computer either internally (via SATA cables) or externally (via a different external enclosure, docking station, SATA to USB adapter), to see if it's powered up and if you can get to your data. Note that if your drive is under warranty, this would void it.
If nothing seems to be working the only option left for you is a data recovery company.

Good luck! Hope that helps.

Actually sometimes the hdd company gives a grace period of 2-3 days in which they will repair the hdd, and if its less than 5 years like 4yr 364days he can get a replacement(a service centre guy once told me)

I agree with you there. It should be replaced if reported within the warranty period no matter if it is 1 or 2 days before it expires. But I assumed it was probably out of warranty because, to me, it sounded like 5 years have already passed and there are not many external drives with a 5 year warranty even it's not been a full 5-year period. :)
