Hello! This is my first post here since I couldn't any threads for introducing yourself so Ill begin here along with my question.

My name is Super Noob aka daAmazinFatB0y.

Im a pc gamer but Im still learning. Certain things I have no idea about so please excuse my noobness lol

Now onto my questions This might be a bit long so I apologise in advance.

I wish to upgrade my graphics card so I can play The Witcher 3 maxed out. Id like to keep it at 60fps as close as possible. I will be playing it without Nvidia Hairworks. Thats just too demanding and the game seems to look just fine without it.

My pc is pre-made one by Dell lol

Current specs:
I7-3770 (non k)
Nvidia GTX 660 1.5gb
12gb ram
2tb hdd
Windows 10

I wanted to purchase a gtx 980 (non ti) but a friend of mine suggested the 970 instead which sounds reasonable and is very good graphics card but Ive seen gameplay videos on youtube with people having frames lowered to 40ish mark at 1080p with Witcher 3. Im going to be constantly fiddling with the settings just to get it right and I sure as hell dont want to do that lol

My friend also says theirs a chance of bottleneck because of my cpu.

I should also mention that im perfectly fine with 1080p and have no plans of upgrading to a 2k or 4k monitor. Some of you may find that weird but I just feel good with 1080p.

So with all that in mind. Is the gtx 980 too much for 1080p and i7 3770 (non k)?

Would that be considered overkill and cause bottleneck?

Or should I just get a 970 and deal with the 40ish drops on witcher 3?

Thanks.

so there are different opinions, some say it will and some say it won't.
here's what i think, to be honest i don't think it will bottleneck at all. a lot games are mostly using the gpu and almost no cpu so it won't bottleneck, the witcher 3 is 1 of them. when it comes to cpu intensive games, there might be a bottleneck but it won't be a lot for sure. who cares if your cpu is holding you 4,045% back in 20% of the games. i personally use a non overclocked 4790k with a 980 ti, and the 3770 comes really close to that (when gaming ofcourse) and i don't run into problems either.

if i were you just get it.

people are always complaining about bottlenecks, if it isnt the gpu it must be the cpu or else the RAM...

Well a 970 isn't going to give you a solid 60 fps when playing the witcher 3 maxed out. So if a solid 60 fps is needed get the 980.

The 970 is still a great card and can overclock really well, without hair works and a good overclock it will run close to 60 i think.

But if you want to be a 100% sure get the 980.

I personally use a 980ti and play the witcher 3 at 4k with around 45 fps which I think is no problem

The 980 will give you better performance obviously. So as nymzy said, if you are really aiming for a solid 60 FPS, get the 980 as you will not have to fiddle with the in-game settings anymore aside from setting it to ultra (except turning hairworks off of course). You will still be able to play Witcher 3 on ultra with a 970 but frames will not be a constant 60 FPS. If you want to save some cash and getting lower than 60 FPS (albeit still very playable) is not a problem, go with the 970. Either card won't bottleneck your i7 even if it's a non-K version so no worries about that.

While it won't consistently hit 60 fps, the 970 will definitely do very well, (hey, it can run Alien Isolation maxed out on 40 fps). Aaaand, you can always add in a second 970 later down the road, which will give you better performance than a single 980.

I could do that but I just wanna focus on one card just now.

I have bukojoe confirming there will be no bottleneck but I need more opinions. I really want to go for a 980 unless somebody can confirm its just not worth going for it.

there will always be a component that will run slower than all the other componens.
