Trying to figure out what is hanging up my wife's system during start up. I've been troubleshooting the best I know how, so I figured I'd come here.

Original Symptom: After upgrading to Win10 Pro, system would hang and freeze with around 5 minutes of use, requiring a restart.

Troubleshooting:
- Attempted repair of installation, repair failed numerous times, with system freezing.
- Decided to fresh install Win10, needed product key. Booted Ubuntu from USB drive to recover it. After 5-10 minutes of use, PC froze (rules out bad drive)
- PC would hang while installing Win10
- Cleaned out internals of PC to rule out heating issue, reseated CPU cooler with new thermal compound. CPU operating at normal temps in BIOS (34 C).
- Removed second HDD and video card to limit variables.

Current situation - PC will install Windows 10, but will freeze during first reboot.

Current suspected hardware failures are in the Power Supply, Motherboard, or CPU.

System Specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom X6 1035T (4+ years old)
Motherboard: MSI 760GM-E51 (2 years old)
Power supply: Ultra ULT-500P 500W PSU, came with a case, over 8 years old, but just started using it 2 years ago)

My first guess is that the PSU is having issues, and it would also be the cheapest fix. However, I don't want to dump 60-70 into a new CX 500 to find out it's the Mobo or CPU if I can help it.

Thanks,

Michael

I actually figured it out. It was the only thing I hadn't really tried yet, and it was recommended to me by a friend. I swapped out the RAM with mine from my PC, and everything was right as rain, and actually a whole lot snappier. I think at least one of the 4x2GB gave out, so I swapped it for a couple 4GB from Crucial, and now it works like a charm.

Thanks cin19. If I hadn't already swapped the RAM, your response would have led me there.

Thanks,

Mike
