Laptop screen goes black when VGA is connected

So I have done this previously but this time when i turned on my laptop and connected it, it didnt come on. I connect it then then both screens goes black and the monitor goes into power saving mode. I ticked the turn off laptop screen when external monitor is connected when i had a monitor in but now i cant untick because the option doesnt show.unless i have a monitor in.

With the VGA plugged in right click on the screen that you plugged in and select screen resolution. Then on the multiple displays tab, select extend desktop to this display or duplicate. Whichever you prefer.
