I recently purchased an intel core 2 quad q6600 to try and get a few more years out of my OptiPlex 755. When I got it, I installed it and my computer booted fine but when I went to task manager it still showed the old cpu (intel core 2 duo) and only 2 cores. I checked on CPU-Z and that said there were only 2 cores too (though it did get the processor name right).
