EVGA GTX 670 Exhaust Issues

Recently I've noticed that my GPU has been getting quite a lot hotter than it used to. It idles at 42c, which I know is too hot, where-as it used to idle between 29c-35c (depending upon the temperature of the room at the time.)

I was looking into the issue when I noticed that there was no air being blown out of its vents in the back of the PC, so I checked the fan and it is spinning just fine and using the EVGA utility I can make it spin up (and it makes a lot more noise as it should,) but all the same, no air out of the back. The card (and every other component) has recently been blown out with compressed air to clear the dust also.

Lastly, it takes the card forever to cool back down once it has reached a high temperature. As in if it gets to 70c, it'll take it half an hour or so to finally cool itself down to 40c and that is with the fan speed maxed out. Pretty much any game newer than Oblivion causes it to get in the 90s and in a few cases it has completely shut the computer down to cool itself. I was in the past able to run Skyrim with many graphical mods and the highest I ever saw it get was 75c-80c, sometimes a bit more.

Any idea of what could be wrong? ... And if this is the wrong area of the forum I do apologize in advance. :/

Solution
Ok, here's what I'd do. Open the case and verify the fan(s) are working on the GPU. If the fans are working you probably just need to clean out the dust. Shutdown the pc and unplug the power cord from the back. Using a can of clean compressed air (walmart, office depot, etc..), carefully blow the dust out of the GPU heatsink. Blow out the CPU heatsink while you're at it. A few cautions to remember-
-Don't let the compressed air spin the fans really fast or you could ruin the bearings.
-Don't tilt the can too much or you'll spray cold liquid out that can damage things.
-Don't spray cold air on a hot pc. Let it cool down first.

Hi there,

First of all when you say you have cleaned the dust out with compressed air, make sure its not broken anything when you did it. But tbh it is quite old. Maybe you should start looking for a new one.

It isn't overclocked, no. What I find so strange is that the fan is seemingly working fine (it spins up the same as it used to and sounds the same as it used to) but it seems like it isn't venting the heat anywhere.

I know it's old. I was going to buy a 970 this week but I just had to replace my mobo in this PC, so I'm going to have to wait on the GPU. Anyway, after looking through the back vents with a flashlight and looking over the card, at the fan, ect, everything seems to be perfectly fine with it. That is what is so strange about this to me. It looks fine, the fan works fine, it just isn't venting the heat... Could it be clogged on the inside or something?

I understand this but air used to come out of the back vents. I used to could feel it and now I can't. Now that I can't, the GPU is getting hot fast. It's 20c in this room and I have done nothing but hop onto this forum thus far (and the PC hasn't been on long at all either) and the gpu is at 41c. The heat just isn't being moved out of the card or something. I have had the card for three years now though...

Should I replace the cooler on the card?

Okay well, I just found a big issue within my case. My cooler Master hyper 212 evo's fan is spinning extremely slow. I'm going to assume that that is my whole cooling issue right there.

I will try that after I go pick up some new canned air. Hopefully I can get the GPU venting properly, find my processors original cooling setup for now and order a new hyper evo 212 I suppose

Okay I've temporarily fixed the CPU's cooler by mounting a case fan from an old server I have (the thing is a bit loud but that's fine) onto the heatsink temporarily while I wait on the replacement cooler. Watching the temperatures, it's keeping things cooled down adequately for now (it is actually doing a better job than anticipated). As for the GPU, I didn't have time to work on it today as it turns out but I am going to do so tomorrow and get back to you folks. Thanks for the help so far. :)

Okay I've cleaned the card and it seems to be working better, though still not as it used to. I think that this is good enough to last for the rest of August so that I can upgrade to a 970 like I planned. Thank you folks. :)

Edit: -- I cleaned it more thoroughly and it went to venting air out of the back just as it used to and is now (and this room is pretty bloody hot at the moment because the AC decided to freeze up) running at 30c. Thank you again for the tips folks.
